Candle Care Tips
It is our hope you love our candles as much as we love making them! Here are a few tips and tricks to help you get the most enjoyment out of your candle.
CANDLE BURNING TIPS
The first time you burn your candle sets the stage for the life of your candle. Candle wax has a "memory" so it tends to adhere to the same shape as the last time it was burned. This means that if you light your candle and it does not melt to the edges of the glass (in other words, if the entire top layer of wax is not completely melted) before the candle is blown out, the next time the candle will only go to the edge of where it was last melted. This is called "tunneling" or when the candle is burned down the center of the glass instead of cleanly down the sides of the glass.
To prevent "tunneling" make sure to burn your candle until the top layer is fully melted every time you burn your candle and keep away from drafts that may disrupt the candle from burning evenly.
Our wooden wicks are made out of two pieces of pressed soft wood that crackle when lit. Since our wicks are made from two individual pieces of pressed wood, it is common to see the pieces appear like they are pulling apart when the candle is burning and may be very noticeable when the candle is extinguished. This is completely normal and part of the process of burning a wooden wick.
Also, wooden wicks are not "self-trimming" which means is that the wick will remain the same length from where it was originally measured for the candle until you trim it.
Trimming your wick is very important because a wick that is too long will try to pull up too much soy wax, flicker and have trouble staying lit.
To trim the wick, you may use a wick trimmer, which is a tool specifically designed to reach into long narrow containers and trim the wick to 1/8 inch. If you do not have a wick trimmer, you can simply use your fingers to pinch off any excess burned edges of the wick until the wick is 1/8 inch in length.
If you notice that your candle is flickering and going out, check to see if the wick needs trimming. Usually trimming the wick to the correct length will resolve the issue.
If this still persists, keep the flame from your lighter or match on the wooden wick for a few seconds longer than you would normally in order to keep the wick lit.
